P2119 Code: Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/performance

The P2119 diagnostic trouble code appears when you press the accelerator pedal on your vehicle, the amount that you press the pedal opens up the throttle a certain amount.

In order to make sure you’re getting the amount of power that you’re expecting, the powertrain control module (PCM) monitors where the throttle is and what it would expect the throttle to be at any given time.

If the PCM is expecting the throttle to be in a specific place and it’s in a different one, then it will set this code.

What Does Code P2119 Mean?

OBD-II Code P2119 is defined as a “Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance”.

P2119 Code

The electronic throttle control system (ETCS) controls the throttle valve opening.

When the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APP) sends a signal to the engine’s control module (PCM) telling the PCM how much power the driver is requesting from the engine.

The PCM then commands the throttle plate to open accordingly. If the PCM detects the Electronic Throttle Control is not operating as requested, the PCM will set code P2119.

The PCM may also put the engine into “limp home mode”, limiting the available power from the engine to prevent unwanted acceleration.

Potential Causes of a P2119 Code

What causes this problem with the Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range?

  • The throttle body might be faulty.
  • The linkage or the throttle plate might be muddy.
  • Defective throttle position sensor.
  • Damaged accelerator pedal position sensor.
  • Faulty throttle actuator control motor.
  • The connector might be damaged or corroded.
  • The wires might be defective or broken.
  • The PCM might be defective.

What are the Common Symptoms of the P2119 Code?

The severity of this code can be moderate to severe based on the specific malfunction. Symptoms of a P2119 trouble code may include:

  • Engine will not start
  • Poor performance that progresses
  • Little, or no throttle response
  • Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Smoke from tailpipe
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to Fix P2119 Code?

You can correct your P2119 code by inspecting the parts associated with it, repair them or easily replace them with us.

  1. Throttle Control System – Malfunctioning of the throttle control system will take place if the power is less. Repair or replace the throttle control system immediately.
  2. Throttle Valve – Any blockages in the throttle valve can cause malfunctioning of the vehicle which in turn reduces the performance of the engine. Repair or replace the damaged throttle valve as needed.
  3. Throttle Body – A very low idle after starting the vehicle indicates that the throttle body is defective.
  4. Throttle Plate – A dirty throttle plate will result in poor or low idle.
  5. Powertrain Control Module – Performance issue may rise in your vehicle if the PCM is defective. Replace the defective PCM  – Performance issue may rise in your vehicle if the PCM is defective.
  6. Engine Control Module – Conditions of misfire indicates that the ECM is faulty which needs replacement as soon as possible.
  7. Throttle Position Sensor – One of the symptom for a defective throttle position sensor, is the engine stalling. Get rid of the damaged throttle position sensor immediately.
  8. Accelerator Pedal Position SensorDo you experience a sudden surge in speed while driving in the highway? Then it’s a high time you replace your accelerator pedal position sensor as it can be defective.
  9. Throttle Actuator Control Motor – Throttle actuator control motor can be damaged if the engine refuses to start. Alter it as soon as possible.
  10. Engine Wiring Connectors – The engine wiring connectors play an important role in connecting various components.

How Much Does it cost to Fix a P2119 Code

The cost to fix a P2119 code can vary significantly depending on the root cause and the vehicle make/model. Some rough estimates for common repairs:

  • Throttle body cleaning: $50-150 USD
  • Throttle position sensor replacement: $100-300 USD
  • Throttle body/actuator replacement: $300-1000+ USD
  • Wiring repairs: $100-300 USD

Diagnostic labor and any additional parts would be extra. Always get a quote from a trusted mechanic before authorizing repairs.
